Rated 0 to 2

Premises whose most recent rating is 2 (improvement necessary), 1 (major improvement necessary) or 0 (urgent improvement necessary). A rating reflects what the inspector found on the day. Many businesses improve quickly and can ask for a re-inspection.

Rated 5 by town

Share of rated premises with the top score of 5. Towns with at least 15 rated premises.

How the ratings work

Council food safety officers inspect how food is handled and stored, the condition of the premises, and how well the business manages food safety. Each area is scored, and the scores combine into the rating. In those scores, lower is better.

5 very good, 4 good, 3 generally satisfactory, 2 improvement necessary, 1 major improvement necessary, 0 urgent improvement necessary.

In Wales, businesses must by law display their rating sticker where customers can see it, and takeaways must print a statement about it on their menus. In England, displaying it is voluntary.

Businesses can appeal, ask for a re-inspection after making improvements, and publish a right to reply, which is shown with their rating. Home-based businesses do not have their address published.
